Author's Note: This post will be a bit more personal and not as many direct jabs at The Crossing Church (though there will be some). I'm fully carb loaded, with wine in hand, and ready for the comments about how I'm so "bitter" and have "hardened my heart".
My last Christmas as The Crossing Church was December of 2010. It was a Christmas Eve service, candlelight I believe, and I was stressed as always.
Going to church The Crossing Church as a family was difficult. First, there are people directing you in the parking lot. This is nice and fine if you have a small vehicle. My husband drives a large truck, and without fail there was some 15 year old forcibly directing my husband into a spot that would never fit the truck. My husband would be mad, would ignore the direction (you are supposed to submit to their authority, even if they are idiots, so my nerves would go to high), and park where he wanted. I would be praying the entire time for God, Jesus, someone to please give us a truck-sized spot so we could obey and not get in trouble. Never. Not once.
Next came the seating Nazis. In accordance with Crossing policy (or rather copying what Elevation Church does), people would be seated front to back with no spaces in between. This was to give a feeling of high energy and excitement. Well fuck...my husband has a bad knee and needs to be on an end to straighten his leg. He would ask the seating person kindly to seat him on an end, up front, in back, any end as long as he wasn't cramped in the middle. They would begrudgingly do it but not without a shit ton of shame. But then inevitably they would need to fill more seats and try to force us to the middle. It was a fight every single week and this time was no exception.
I didn't want to obey them, I fully saw my husband's point, but I felt The Crossing was my last hope in trying to do the Christian thing, and felt compliance was the only way I could make it to the other side. As we sat down I was arranging my coat, gloves and purse, and looked down to see the diamond had fallen out of my wedding ring. My eyes welled with tears. In any other place or situation I would have asked for help in looking for it. I would have asked for the lights to be turned on, or asked that people search for it after the service. But I didn't feel I could do that here. We were supposed to be depopulating hell and not worried about material things. I felt I'd be shamed to ask.
Now my diamond wasn't some massive full carat or anything special. It was a chip at best. My husband had proposed on Christmas Eve. We were poor and he used all he had to buy me that ring. It was my chip. Now here we were on Christmas Eve again and it was gone forever. I prayed, "Why? Why?! Am I really not allowed anything? WHY!?!" The silence permeated me.
That was to be the last Christmas Eve in a church for me. I don't miss it. I don't miss a thing.

Eric is Unshakable! Well not really....
The Crossing Church's latest sermon series "Unshakable" is out and {yawn} it's the same tired stuff we've heard for years and years. Lets look at some highlights:
"I give even when I don't have any money!" Really, Eric? Tell us about the last time you didn't have money. You are manipulating people at their lowest point, without money, to keep up your lifestyle.
"It seems like our culture is constantly telling women that beauty is found in the exterior....don't go out and be ugly...." Is anyone else hearing Trump's voice? (I digress.) I don't see how you can dare preach on obsession with outward beauty when your wife uses half of her Instagram posts humble bragging for people to compliment her. And "don't go out and be ugly"?? Fuck.
"they are going to lie about you, twist the truth..." And there we go! This is the one we've been waiting for. How many sermons, how many times a year, does Eric have to say that someone has been wrongly slamming on him? For the facts, not lies, as to why people have made critical comments about Eric Dykstra and the Crossing Church; this post details them well with many links to sources.
Eric, you were not "called out for your faith". You were rightly talked about in negative terms because of your actions. The audacity that instead of fully owning all the things you did as an abusive leader, but instead saying it's for God, is disgraceful and horrific.
"For all of you that never get attacked for your faith, maybe you don't actually have any." You are such an arrogant asshole! I know many people of faith, true to their core faith, that do not get attacked. They aren't getting attacked because they aren't power hungry, manipulative, devious pricks!
Same request, as always, please stop.
And remember Crossing minions; no commenting! Eric's orders!

Kelly "Fights for a Girl"...sort of
I've been watching Kelly's Dykstra's new initiative "Fight for a Girl" with interest to see if this will actually be something of value and help for females or simply another way for Kelly to glorify herself. The information is sketchy.
This seems to be their mission statement:
Fight For A Girl seeks to empower women globally to rise up into the calling of freedom on their lives. And we want you to be a part of it with us. We want to create a platform where we can learn how to fight for ourselves, our relationships, our neighbors, and our sisters on the other side of the world. We want to see you rise up, and we believe that as you do, the people around you will be freed to rise up, too. Our goal is to be a partner, a bridge, a resource, and an encouragement as we all open our eyes and join hands with each other.
They frequently allude to money that is raised at the Twirl events, or through buying their ever growing amount of merchandise, in some way goes to "Fight for a Girl" yet dollar figures are never given and you aren't sure exactly who is being helped. There was a scholarship fund to send a single mother to Crossing College, but again, this only gives money straight back to The Crossing! Ca-Ching!
All this aside; Kelly actually had a heartfelt and poignant post after the election talking about what the loss meant to women. She spoke about women rising up. She spoke about being strong women. She spoke candidly about her feelings. Right when I almost had an ounce of respect for her the post was taken down. And this post was put up:
She was told by "close friends" (read = friends in power) that "the issues surrounding the candidates and parties are too volatile for this". They are right. The issues are volatile and this is why you should be speaking up! Fuck your friends, Kelly. You did nothing wrong. Well until you cowered to the powers that be.
I do hope you "Fight for a Girl" one day but you sure aren't now.

Comments about The Crossing Church
Though advocates for The Crossing Church like to bash me and say that no one is reading this blog, or the others, and no one cares about what is being shared, I'd like to offer comments my blog and others have received from people that have left The Crossing Church and even those still attending.
The comments speak for themselves. (names redacted)
Well of course they need extra mid week services, have you noticed the travel budget they have now? Seriously, it seems like they are on a plane 3x a month. Kelly has so much arrogance she can't control herself. Constant social media posts on their travels or her newest pair of shoes. I heard they don't even live in the community anymore, live in St. Paul so kid can go to fancy school. When folks were struggling with being upside down in their houses during the housing crisis, they upgraded to nice river home...and conveniently had a former staff member rent their old home.
Has anyone noticed that Eric has only been there a few times all summer? I wish i had so much vacation time. Just really confused with where they are at these days. I think the Church has "jumped the shark". Still go and enjoy the 1x a month that the message is really strong. But eyes are wide open, our giving has cut in half. We give what feels right, not what Crossing presses for. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of great options. Wife and I are lifelong Catholics and that situation is a total mess...much worse than the Crossing in my opinion.
Stay strong folks.

You are exactly right! What is sick is that it's been going on since from day one. What is crazy is that they criticize you for saying it, when Peter and Paul did plenty of rebuking. Here is just two pieces of Scripture you will NEVER hear spoken there.
Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! (Acts 8:20 NIV)
Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God. (2 Corinthians 2:17 NIV)

Memories of The Crossing Church
It has been over 5 years since I darkened the doors of The Crossing Church in Elk River, Minnesota. I see it frequently as I drive by for my work on occasion. The new building, where they manipulated so many out of their hard earned money in Code of the Samurai, is up and shining in the sun. I initially thought they'd be sorry for their actions and go back to the old days of reaching out to the broken. There were some apologies but it's back to business as usual. Though many are still leaving, and for the same reasons we spoke of years ago, they are quite skilled at getting in a new pack of ignorant wide-eyed fools (I used to be one) to financially support their rise to the top.
I've pondered for years now as to when the change happened and why it happened. Yes, they got involved with Joel Osteen and saw dollar signs, but it was before that. Yes, Eric wanted to compete with Steven Furtick, but it was before that. I think I've finally figured it out.
The Crossing Church wasn't always a money hungry group of vain "pastors" more concerned with image and your tithe money than the pain and suffering in your life. Here is a short list of good memories I had at The Crossing Church and why I stayed as long as I did:
Take a look at yourselves Crossing. Think back to when you first started and compare it to today; are things better? Has anyone really been saved? Yes, you've "dunked" many but what happened to them after they dried off? Can you chill your enormous egos for one damn moment to see the damage you've caused? I hope you can. I truly do.

You stopped serving your people and made the people serve you.
The Crossing Church wasn't always a money hungry group of vain "pastors" more concerned with image and your tithe money than the pain and suffering in your life. Here is a short list of good memories I had at The Crossing Church and why I stayed as long as I did:
- The offering wasn't pushed. In fact, they used to say that if you were in need you could reach in and grab some cash to get you through. Now I do understand that they no longer allow this because people are putting their credit card information on the "connectvelopes" (Oh hell....I just can't with that one.) Reasonable but another reason it's not the place it used to be.
- SHED. This was a challenge to get your personal possessions down to 100 items. You were allowed to determine what that meant to you and your family, but the idea was to get rid of clutter and ultimately give the excess to others. The Crossing did this as a church and sermons were preached on it. I'm a natural giver so I was all over this. My entire family "shed" a full truck and trailer's worth of stuff. We were told there would be a semi at the church that day to give the items (there wasn't - the whole thing was a cluster-fuck) but we were still able to give to a local charity. It felt like something Jesus would do. How are those 100 items Eric & Kelly?
- There was a sense of community. You could speak to the pastors, any of them, on a one-on-one basis. They knew your name. They seemed to care. They were actual humans and not faces on a highway billboard.
- It was fun. Now I know the super legalists freaked out about their "worship" and giving sermons with practical application instead of "unpacking scripture", but it was helpful. You wanted to go back. For someone who has had a bible shoved down their throat from birth, it was a breath of fresh air.
I truly do.

Another sad, yet all too familiar, story of people leaving The Crossing Church. Please read the powerful words of Neil and Hannah and ask yourself some hard questions. As they said, "Don’t just take our word for it. Do some investigation of your own."

The Crossing's "Reach Report"
Tracking everything ~ THE REACH REPORT
- First-time Guest Calls
- Weekend Connect Calls/Conversations
- Invite people to worship & ask who they are reaching
- Campus Pastor is expected to do 50 calls and Staff Members are expected to do 10.
- Volunteer Calls/Conversations
- Invite people to join a your/a team.
- Expectation is 3 PER WEEK!
- List the names of those you invited to church or shared Christ with this week
- Campus Pastor is expected to do 10 and Staff Members are expected to do 1-3.
- Also must list notes about your conversation. (Gee...anyone else feel a bit violated?)
- Name 3 Volunteers you thanked (Good! You're killing these people so the least you can do is thank them! And then ask them to do more I'm sure.)
- Name the person you sat with in a service or personally influenced to fill a seat.
- Name one thing you did to go out of your way to build a connection with a lost person this week (Nice except they are just a number to fill a seat, bring to Christ, force to volunteer and rake in the tithe money!)
- Name one of the ways you used social media to influence people this week. (Oh yes, your Facebook/Instagram/Twitter is not yours ~ The Crossing owns you.)
- Name one person you met in the lobby this week.

Cabin Services at The Crossing Church
Can't make it to the week end services? Have no worries...The Crossing Church now has "Cabin Services" on Wednesday nights! So why would they need to do this if you can always hear the talks online later?
The entire reason for these Cabin Services is because when you are not there on the week end you don't tithe, so this is their tricky way of making sure they get your money.
Have you noticed how often tithing (money) is spoken about at The Crossing Church? They weave it into everything to inundate you with the same message so you'll feel you have to give. It's manipulation and it's wrong.
Do you think I'm wrong? Ask them. Ask them point blank if the Cabin Services are to get more money. Ask all the hard questions that are eating at you. Ask about the concerns you have with the church that you are afraid to talk about. Ask yourself why you are afraid to speak.

You can leave The Crossing Church
Does something feel off to you but you can't put your finger on it? Well it's because a lot is wrong.
Are you afraid to ask questions? Why would that be? Ask for detailed financial reports, ask about the WCCO news reports, ask about the blogs...and see what happens.
Are you scared to say "no" to their requests to serve more? To give more?
Are you being asked to act with Radical Faith per their code; and you don't want to? You don't have to.
What happens when you attempt to say "no"? Are you shamed? Blamed? Even threatened?
You can leave The Crossing Church. Really, you can. You are not under their authority. God isn't going to punish you. You can leave.
Join us in the Back Alley....it's nice...you can breathe again.

The Crossing Church - Exhausting their Volunteers
Hey Crossing Church Volunteers ~ You must be so tired. You are serving until exhaustion and it's still not enough, right? Did you make all your calls? Did you 'reach' enough people? (And do you have documentation to prove this?) Serving week ends, mandatory Community of Leaders meetings and now the Wednesday night "Cabin Services" (which you know are only to bring in more tithe money), not to mention any other random event that can't go on without you. Open a new location and you have to be there to fill the seats. Add on the mental exhaustion of emails reprimanding you for not doing enough, not doing it the way they want and additional financial burdens of penalties for not living up to their code of the moment.
Is all this serving for Jesus (Eric & Kelly Dykstra) worth it? Are you happy?
Kelly says in her recent sermon (minute 25:11) "on a monthly basis staff members have conversations with people who are leaving the church because they got their feelings hurt, there was a misunderstanding, they were asked to volunteer too much and didn't want to say 'no'..."
They didn't want to say "no" to volunteering too much or felt they couldn't say "no"? Is "No, I don't want to volunteer." even an option?
Tithe and Serve is the battle cry at The Crossing and will be slammed into with every sermon and now ever Section Leader. Try and say "no" and tell me what happens.
Kelly Dykstra asked on her Instagram today:
Serving them is costing you your family, your money and your life. Again, I can't stress this enough, you can leave!!

Tracking your every move at The Crossing Church
So you'd like to go to church, stay a little under the radar and then go about your life? Not at The Crossing Church, as your every move is now being tracked. Lets break down how it now works:
Well you already know about the seat Nazis; you aren't allowed to be a grown up and pick the seat of your choosing as you are told where you will sit. This is done for two reasons; first, to make the room look filled and create an excited energy from being packed together, second, is for you to start submitting to their self-claimed authority over you.
Now along with your assigned seat comes the new Section Leaders. This is the brain child of mega-church pastor Bill Hybels. As you can see in this video, he explains that the entire church will be broken out into sections and each section will have a leader. He wants every person that comes in the church to be 'touched' by someone and welcomed. Sounds nice, right? Not really. The Section Leaders are then responsible for reciting scripted messages, usually about serving or tithing, to their sections and making those numbers happen. They'll speak to you as if they have some special thoughts from their heart but they have been given the exact words to say. If they see a new person they are to stop any conversation they are having and try and get that new person to their section. So of course numbers in each section are tracked, how many people they speak to are tracked and how many conversations they have outside of church are tracked. More people in the door means more tithe money coming in. Are you seeing the manipulation now?
When you don't show up the next week you are called as you're now on their radar. It's all done under the guise of "we miss you" but what they miss is that you are a number and their numbers went down when you weren't there. It's all false caring and it's fucking hurtful.
I'll say it again and I won't stop saying it ~ YOU CAN LEAVE! You may feel you have to stay, you may feel you have nowhere else to go, you may feel stuck but you aren't. People will not go to hell because you leave The Crossing Church. God is not going to be angry if you make a decision for yourself. You are not alone and you will be just fine. Really.

It's time to wake up, Crossing Church!
It's time to wake up, Crossing Church! You are being manipulated, used and even extorted by the leadership of The Crossing Church of Elk River, Minnesota; most specifically Eric and Kelly Dykstra. Your time, your resources, and of course your money, are being bled dry by this church.
Ask yourself these questions and see what answers you come up with (Be honest! Jesus is watching!):
How many hours of your time is spent in service to The Crossing Church? This includes inviting people to church, calling people and doing all their marketing for them.
How much money are you giving to The Crossing Church? How much is above the required Old Testament mandate of giving "10% of your fields". Give Eric a bail of hay next time you see him and enjoy that reaction!
How many emails, calls and verbal reprimands are you treated to in a week? How many forms do you need to fill out for their approval? What are the repercussions of not doing these things?
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30 - 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Does anything about your current experience feel "light"? I know you are tired. Exhausted in fact. But you have been so completely brainwashed that the church, The Crossing Church, is the only hope for the world and you feel everyone's fate rides on your shoulders.
You always want to do something amazing, right? This is another part that lures you in. "We have a vision from God! We're going to be a church of 20,000!" Or is it 10,000? I heard God's been changing the numbers recently. Check with Eric, as God's only speaking to him.
Compare your life to Eric & Kelly's:
Are you frequently traveling and vacationing?
Dining out at fine restaurants?

You may be angry at me for saying it, or not agree with my methods, but am I wrong? Come on; am I wrong!?!
You do not have to stay there. God is not going to punish you for leaving. Are you scared? (Most are when they leave The Crossing Church) I'd be happy to talk to you and will keep it fully anonymous. TFTBA@mail.com It's YOUR life! Eric & Kelly Dykstra have not been placed in authority over you by God...YOU gave them that authority and you can take it away.
Get out. Be free. It's a much happier place to be.

The Crossing Church wants your money right away!
The Crossing Church of Elk River, Minnesota wants your money. $ Money $ Money $ Money $ But they don't simply want you to ask you for your hard earned cash after the sermon because there is a possibility you may leave before their 5 minute (10 minute, upwards of 15 minutes!) tithing speech. So now you'll notice they do the push for money during worship time; "as part of the worship experience".
You understand this is all cleverly orchestrated to manipulate you, right? This isn't God speaking on their behalf. You have a Section Leader (oh yes, we'll be talking about the 'Sections' very soon) who has been given a script on what to say to you, which ties into the tithe talk and sermon. Have you noticed the forced clapping as they do the offering? Again, this is more subtle manipulation for you to give a conditioned response (giving them money) when you make this motion each time.
Eric and Kelly Dykstra are using you! Wake up!

Money and The Crossing Church
This will be short and to the point; I see my views are way up, as well as views on blog posts linked to mine, and most specifically the posts about money. So what's up Crossing Church people? Eric & Kelly laying the manipulation on thick to tithe more? This would be typical timing as they'll want more money before a kick off event around back to school.
Now as always I do have to point out that the Dykstra's are never lacking in funds for their own vacations and spending. Tell me Crossing Church givers: how many trips have you taken this year? Are you giving way over 10% of your income, struggling to make ends meet, and curious as to why the Dykstra's continue to live large on your dime? Good questions.
If you would like to contact me please email to: TFTBA@mail.com

- You may keep all anonymity and I will never disclose anything you tell me not to say. I've run this blog for 6 years to help people leave the manipulation of The Crossing Church. I'm here to help.
A few pics of Eric & Kelly living high off the hog....using your tithe money. All for Jesus! Right?

Here is why The Crossing Church (Free Grace United) has been called a Cult
In The Crossing Church's latest series "Havin' Church", Eric Dykstra gave a sermon called "What's the difference between a Church and a Cult?" Do tell! I listened with great anticipation to find that cults were never spoken of in this sermon. Curious. There are many ways to speak on a number of points that came up from this sermon, but right now I only want to talk about why they didn't actually talk about cults, and more specifically why The Crossing Church has been called a cult.
The sermon tried to explain what a "healthy" church looks like, and by comparison, how The Crossing Church is supposedly healthy. (It's not.) Eric Dykstra says that a healthy church is not label focused, not person focused and not system focused. This from the person that put his and his wife's faces on a billboard. This from the person that tries to brand everything with the Crossing logo. This from the church that has a fully system focused Code!
I broke this down in my post "I'm Offended" as to why people called The Crossing Church a Cult. I'll list the reasons again:

I broke this down in my post "I'm Offended" as to why people called The Crossing Church a Cult. I'll list the reasons again:
- A mother was trying to save her son after your reckless comments and authority trip caused him to leave his family, get married hastily and leave college. Here is her story: One Mother's Journey
- You were kicking people out of your church, ruining lives and acting like a cult. Another story: Open Letter to Eric Dykstra
- You were so focused on church growth and yourselves that people were treated like they were disposable. Another story:Keeping the Faith
- You were forcing submission, insane amounts of tithing and promoting fear. WCCO news report: Community in Elk River Discusses Controversial Church
- You wouldn't take accountability for anything. WCCO news report: Pastor Addresses Controversy
- You were allowing abusive leadership to lie and hurt others. My Story
Here are typical signs of possibly being in a cult (see below). It's fair to note that some of these signs can be present, and maybe the organization isn't necessarily a cult, but it's still controlling and dangerous.
The Crossing Church members are expected to orbit their lives around that church, they are expected to tithe (big!) and serve to exhaustion. No, The Crossing it's Jonestown about to drink the Kool Aid (yet), but it has domineering leadership, manipulative tactics and unhealthy behaviors.
As Eric Dykstra loves to say, "Run, Forest, Run!!"
- •Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
No one is allowed to question.
No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget or expenses, such as an independently audited financial statement.
- Ask for a statement of the church's finances. Ask to know the Dykstra's salaries. You'll get nothing.
There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
- People that leave are outcasts.
Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
- See blog posts in list above.
There are records, books, news articles, or broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader.
- WCCO news did multiple reports on the abuses of The Crossing.
• The group/leader is always right.
- Read The Code. Eric Dykstra is felt to have a Vision from God!
As Eric Dykstra loves to say, "Run, Forest, Run!!"

The Crossing Profits Big from Pastor Kelly's Twirl Event
Yes, it's Twirl time again. Dress up, dance around, worship Kelly Dykstra, get a token gift and some far NW Minneapolis suburb entertainment. Apparently some chicks dig this and that's fine. Yeah, I'm lying, as I'm judging the hell out of this, but still - go do you.
I've written previously about where I take issue with Twirl; Twirl is primarily to glorify Kelly Dykstra. The upcoming Twirl event is no different as the special guests are Kelly's mother and her sisters. All expenses paid by Crossing tithes? Possibly. I suppose it could also be paid by the Twirl event fee, which has jumped in 6 years from $5 to $12 (or a whopping $20 at the door). Kelly's recent Instagram post says thousands are coming.
Lets stick with a flat 1,000 coming and assume they each pay $12 each, though there are also sponsorship packages of $150, and of course the $20 at the door people who get penalized for not buying early enough (Always only about Jesus!) $12,000 made in one night. Also charging $1 per child for childcare (previously they had the men volunteer to take care of the kids). We'll go with 1/4 of the women needing childcare, and I'm sure I'm estimating low, so that's $250. Everyone working there is volunteering so there are no expenses for labor. It's their space so no cost to utilize the facilities. Throw together some trinkets, printing costs and a bite to eat at about $5 a head (bulk rate). They clear $7,000 for this one event.
Where does this money go? Well the hashtag for the Twirl events has recently been "Fight for a Girl". So is the money going to a charity? It's implied that it goes to something but they never say this directly. There will be a Twirl store to buy things and they do say the money from that will go somewhere. I'm curious. I know the Crossing doesn't do anything they don't benefit from so I suspect this is more about money and Kelly's ego than actually helping any "girls" in a practical way.

I’m curious what those that have recently left thought when we did the “double crossed at the crossing event or when it was all over the news with the warnings of the cultish and money hungry behavior back in 2010 (crazy it’s been 6 years already)
Be thankful you got out of there, and I hope you all take the time to grieve and heal.
PS.. If you go into to a “Church” website and it looks and sound like the crossing….. Do yourself a favor and stay away. These places are all set up exactly the same.
